Etsy AI and Product Photo Rules: What to Update

What has changed?

Most product listings must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background. This required photo cannot be cropped, color-corrected, or otherwise altered.

Other images can be edited, including with AI tools, provided they accurately represent the product. Removing damage, changing the material's appearance, or showing features the item does not have can mislead buyers.

Etsy also prohibits listings generated by bots without human involvement and AI-generated functional guides, such as patterns, recipes, and instructions. AI-generated artwork remains allowed when sellers contribute creatively and disclose AI use. Read Etsy's announcement.

Example: selling a handmade ceramic mug

Include an untouched photograph of the real mug. You may use an additional image with an edited background, but you should not digitally remove a crack or change the glaze to a color the buyer will not receive.

Do the same rules apply to every product?

Product-specific exceptions matter:

Print-on-demand (POD) listings may use authorized stock mockups.
Visual digital downloads should include a preview of the actual content.
Customized items should show real examples of completed work.
Patterns and similar products must show a real, unedited result.
